Personal anecdote: The infamous hp 48 calculators used Kermit for “file” transfer, and for remote control, which was neat.
And I remember that the practically endless configurability of it made it very useful when one would have to adapt to rather peculiar “serial” lines, in terms of allowed / to-be-escaped characters or very high latency.
